Our congregation has sisters not only in Italy, but also in Zimbabwe, Mexico,
Brazil, Albania, Bangladesh, and in my home, Louisiana.

In Louisiana, there are many poor people. Our sisters work with them and help
them.

After witnessing these sisters’ impact on so many lives…I became interested
in religious life.

In 1992, and at the age of thirty, I entered the convent.

Nel 1992, all’età di 30 anni, sono entrata in convento.

Before I was a sister, I was a news producer for an affiliate of the American
Broadcasting Company (ABC).

For ten years, I wrote and produced the daily news program.

Part of my job was to tell stories…news stories about war, peace, famine,
fortune, bad people and good people.

Today, I have a story for you about a man who has had a profound impact on my
country…on my life…his name is Todd Beamer.

You may recognize his name…after all, he is known by millions of people around
the world.

Todd is a regular guy…32 years old…from New Jersey.

A man who has made newspaper headlines all over the world.

A man who has made millions of people cry…and smile.
Un uomo che ha fatto piangere…e ridere milioni di persone.

A man who has given the world a new sense of pride and strength.

Un uomo che ha dato al mondo un nuovo senso di orgoglio e di forza.

It is because this man made an important decision on September 11th….a decision
for life.
E’ perchè quest’uomo l’11 settembre ha preso una decisione importante…una decisione per la vita.

This is not about Todd’s own life, but a decision that he made that would save
the lives of thousands of people….strangers.
Non sulla propria vita,ma una decisione che a fatto si che si salvassero migliaia di persone…estranee.

First, let us go back to the morning of September 11th.
Ma prima di tutto torniamo alla mattina dell’11 settembre.

United Airlines Flight 93 has taken off from New Jersey at 8:42 in the morning.

Il volo 93 dell’United Airlines è partito da New Jersey alle 8,42 del mattino.

The flight is late…41 minutes late.

It is headed for San Francisco, California.

Todd Beamer is on board.

He has a business meeting that day.

The flight is normal. The plane reaches an altitude of 32,000 feet.

Todd leans back and enjoys a glass of juice.

35 minutes into the flight, 3 men wearing red head bands stand up.

Two are armed with knives.

One claims to have a bomb attached to his body.

They kill two people.

There is chaos on the plane.

The 44 passengers and crew are taken to the back of the jetliner.

The pilots have been attacked and are left dying.

The hijackers begin to pilot the plane.

It is turned around and is headed for a new destination.

Many people on board use their cellular phones to call authorities…to call
home.

They call home to say goodbye, knowing that they would die.

Todd does the same.
Todd fa come loro.

He tries to call his wife on one of the plane’s phones, but his calling card
doesn’t work.

He finally gets a telephone operator named Lisa Jefferson.

be used to attack other people.

To prevent the destruction of other lives, Todd and three other men are planning
to jump the terrorists.

The passengers begin filling pitchers with scalding hot water to throw on their
attackers.

Todd then tells the operator, “I don’t think we’re going to get out of this
thing. I’m going to have to go out on faith. Faith in Jesus.”

He then asks the operator to pray with him.

They begin, “Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name.”

The operator can hear chaos and screams in the background.

Todd continues, “Your kingdom come,your will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”
Todd continua “Venga il tuo regno, sia fatta la tua volontà come in cielo così in terra”.

Todd’s voice is calm and clear.
La voce di Todd è calma e nitida.

“Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive
those who trespass against us.”
“Dacci oggi il nostro pane quotidiano e rimetti a noi i nostri debiti come noi li rimettiamo ai nostri debitori”.

Todd forgives the men on board who will take his life.
Todd perdona gli uomini a bordo che gli toglieranno la vita.

“And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.”
“E non ci indurre in tentazione, ma liberaci dal male”.

As they finish, Todd adds, “Jesus, help me.”
Non appena finiscono, Todd aggiunge “Gesù, aiutami”.

He also asks the operator to call his wife and sons.
Chiede anche all’operatrice di chiamare sua moglie e i suoi figli.

“Tell them that I love them.” he said.
“Digli che li amo”.

And then his famous last words: “Are you guys ready? Let’s roll.”

The operator listens helplessly as Todd and the other men attack the terrorists.
L’operatrice ascolta inerme come Todd e gli altri uomini attaccano i terroristi.

Air traffic controllers watch as the big jet begins to fly out of control.
I controllori del traffico aereo vedono come il grande jet comincia a volare senza controllo.

7 minutes later…the airliner crashes into an open field in Pennsylvania.
7 minuti dopo…l’aereo si schianta in aperta campagna in Pennsylvania.

It destroys no one and nothing on the ground.
Non distrugge niente e nessuno a terra.

But Todd, the other passengers, the crew, and the hijackers are killed.
Ma Todd, gli altri passeggeri, l’equipaggio e i dirottatori muoiono.

As millions of other Americans, I too, watched in horror that day as Todd Beamer
and nearly 3000 other people…from the United States, Italy, Canada, Mexico,
the Philippines, and many other countries…were killed.
Come milioni di americani, anch’io, ho visto con orrore come quel giorno Todd Beamer e circa altre 3000 persone…dagli Stati Uniti, dall’Italia, dal Canada, dal Messico, dalle Filippine e da molti altri paesi..sono state uccise.

My view of the terrorist attacks was probably more extensive than the average
American.

I had received a call that morning asking if I would help out in the newsroom
at the television station.
Ho ricevuto una chiamata nella mattinata che mi chiedeva se potevo andare a dare una mano nella sala stampa della stazione televisiva.

I rushed to work. The situation was chaotic.
Sono corsa al lavoro. La situazione era caotica.

There is a big military base in my city and to add to the chaos…President
Bush was flown to my city for protection during the attacks.
Nella mia città c’è una grande base militare e per aggiungere confusione…il presidente Bush è atterrato nella mia città per proteggersi durante gli attacchi.

I stood, with my coworkers, before twenty television monitors and we watched
silently as the towers burned.
Ero in piedi, assieme ai miei collaboratori, davanti a 20 monitor televisivi e guardavamo in silenzio le Torri che bruciavano.

We watched as young men and women were hanging out of windows 90 stories high
begging for help.
Abbiamo visto come giovani uomini e donne si sporgevano dalle finestre del 90esimo piano per chiedere aiuto.

You could see the fire and the smoke at their back.

We watched one young man, in a business suit, jump from a window.

And then we saw two women holding hands jump to their death.

We watched as hundreds of firemen and policemen entered the towers.

And then we watched tower one collapse and then tower two.

We watched as men, women, and children frantically ran through the streets,
covered with ashes,
looking for loved ones.

Then the cameras turned to Washington and we saw the smoke billowing from the
Pentagon, the headquarters of our nation’s defense department.

There were reports that planes, taken over by terrorists, were headed to our
nation’s Capitol…to the White House…to other cities.

We were afraid. I was afraid.
Eravamo spaventati. Io ero spaventata.
Some of my coworkers cried. Some sat motionless. Others picked up phones to
call family members.

All sense of peace and security were gone.
Ogni senso di pace e sicurezza era sparito.

As Christians, we know that God can bring good out of evil.

In Todd Beamer, the world witnessed a faith that held up in the extremity of
fear.
In Todd Beamer il mondo ha potuto vedere una fede che è rimasta salda anche all’estremo della paura.

A faith that is now comforting millions of people, including myself.
Una fede che ora conforta milioni di persone, inclusa me stessa.

Todd’s wife, Lisa, says “You know, in the Lord’s Prayer, it asks us to forgive
our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.”
La moglie di Todd, Lisa, dice “Sapete, nel Padre Nostro, si chiede che ci vengano perdonati i nostri peccati come noi li perdoniamo agli altri”.

As Todd prayed this prayer in the last moments of his life, in a way, Lisa said,
“He was forgiving those people for what they were doing, the most horrible thing
you could ever do to someone.”

It was not Todd Beamer’s job to fight terrorists.
Non è stato il lavoro di Todd Beamer a combattere i terroristi.
He was just a passenger who along with several others did what he did nothave
to do, but prevented a terrible evil that might have taken the lives of thousands
of people.
Era solo un passeggero che assieme a degli altri ha fatto quello che non doveva fare, ma ha così evitato un terribile male che avrebbe tolto la vita a migliaia di persone.

As Flight 93 hurtled towards destruction, Todd could not have known that his
quiet prayers would ultimately be heard by millions.
Mentre il volo 93 andava incontro alla distruzione, Todd non sapeva che le sue ultime, tranquille preghiere sarebbero state ascoltate da milioni di persone.

That the story of his last acts on earth would be a witness to Christ.

That his final words of forgiveness would be a testimony for us to remember.

September 11th changed America…it changed the world. It changed my life.

For weeks now, we have watched a new spirituality grow.

At Ground Zero, where the towers once stood in New York, we find prayer groups…not
vigilante groups.
A Ground Zero, dove una volta a New York si ergevano le due Torri, troviamo gruppi di preghiera…non gruppi di vigilanza.

We find flowers and crosses and candles…not weapons.
Troviamo fiori e croci e candele…non armi.

We find posters with poems about peace and love and forgiveness…not posters
encouraging retaliation and war.
Troviamo ,manifesti con poesie sulla pace, sull’amore e sul perdono…non manifesti che incoraggiano rappresaglie e guerra.

This has become a time to give thanks for what we have, and for those whom we
love.
Questo è diventato un tempo per rendere grazie per quello che abbiamo e per quelli che amiamo.

It has become a time for prayer…a time to cherish peace.
E’ diventato un tempo per pregare…un tempo per avere molta cura della pace.

The day after the attack on America, Pope John Paul II said “Even if the forces
of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death
do not have the final say.”
Il giorno dopo l’attacco all’America, Papa Giovanni Paolo II ha detto”Anche se le forze delle tenebre sembrano prevalere, quelli che credono in Dio sanno che il male e la morte non avranno l’ultima parola”.

It is not easy for us to understand a man like Osama Bin Laden nor his actions.
Non è facile per noi capire un uomo come Osama Bin Laden e neppure le sue azioni.

It is hard for us to believe that Osama Bin Laden prays to God every morning
for two hours.
E’ difficile per noi credere che Osama Bin Laden preghi Dio ogni mattina per 2 ore.

It is hard for us to consider him, as thousands of people do, a holy man.
E’ difficile per noi considerarlo, come fanno migliaia di persone, un uomo santo.

It is hard for us to believe that as a human, he is a child of God.
E’ difficile per noi credere che in quanto essere umano, è un figlio di Dio.

How easy it is for us to hate him.
Quanto è facile per noi odiarlo.

But that hate, as we all know, will only lead us to more destruction…especially
the destruction of peace in our hearts.
Ma quest’odio, come tutti sappiamo, ci porterà soltanto altra distruzione…specialmente la distruzione della pace nei nostri cuori.

37 years ago, Pope Paul VI addressed the United Nations and this is what he
told the world.
“Peace, peace is what must guide the destinies of the peoples and of all mankind!”
And that peace is not built only by politics and the balance of power and interests,
but by the spirit, ideas, and works of peace by the people.”
37 anni fa, Papa Paolo VI si rivolse alle Nazioni Unite e questo è quello che disse al mondo intero “La pace, la pace è ciò che deve guidare il destino delle persone e di tutto il genere umano! E questa pace non è costruita solo dai politici o dal bilanciamento del potere e degli interessi, ma dallo spirito, dalle idee e dal lavoro di pace delle persone”.

In the book of Genesis it says, “You intended to hurt me, but God intended it
for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” (Genesis
50:20)
Nel libro della Genesi sta scritto “Se voi avete ordito del male contro di me, Dio ha pensato di farlo servire a un bene, per compiere ciò che oggi si avvera:salvare la vita a un popolo numeroso”. (Genesi 50,20)

A new foundation has been created in memory of Todd Beamer.
Una nuova fondazione è stata creata in memoria di Todd Beamer.

The Beamer Foundation (Beamerfoundation.org) provides mental health care for
children who have lost parents in violent acts.
La Todd M. Beamer Foundation (Beamerfooundation.org) ha lo scopo di dare un supporto psicologico ai bambini che hanno perso i genitori in modo tragico.

Also, since Todd’s death, his wife gave birth on January 9th to a baby girl
named Morgan.
Dopo la morte di Todd, sua moglie il 9 gennaio ha dato alla luce una bambina di nome Morgan.

On this day, when we revere our Christ who sacrificed his life for our salvation,
let us remember in prayer…Todd Beamer and the other heroes on Flight 93…
the 300 firemen, policemen, and paramedics who died in the towers…
the 3500 innocent victims who died in New York and Washington…
their families…
For those who have been sent to Afghanistan to fight in the war against terrorism.
For Osama Bin Ladin and the al Quad.
For peace in our hearts…and in our world.
In questo giorno in cui veneriamo il nostro Cristo che ha sacrificato la sua vita per la nostra salvezza, ricordiamo nella nostra preghiera…Todd Beamer e gli altri eroi che hanno sacrificato la loro vita sul volo 93…
i 300 tra vigili del fuoco, poliziotti e paramedici che sono morti nelle Torri…
le 3500 vittime innocenti che sono morte a New York e Washington…
le loro famiglie

Let us now join our voices and hands and recite the prayer that gave Todd so
much reassurance in the last moments of his life…”Padre Nostre…”
